Chains

In the book Chains Isabel and her little sister are being sold to a different master due to thier old one dying. They are sold to two loyalist which already had one slave named Becky who is older and does most of the cooking and were willing to take a few more. Soon Isabel got used to working for “Madam Lockton” and everything was going great until the worst thing Isabel could imagine happened. Ruth had a seizure. Ruth is only a couple of years old but has these seizure often. Madam thinks that Ruth is a demon child and begs her husband to sell her, but he thinks different. As the days go on Isabel meets a slave boy named Curzon. Since Isabels masters are loyalist he asks her to spy on them and tell him the information. At first shes says no but finally after hearing some important news she reports it to him. She is a rebellion in the making. Then one day Mrs.Locton leaves and he says hes not coming back. Suddenly Madam is being very nice to Isabel and gives her a day off, and some Delicious milk and cookies, which she later find out had sleeping potion. The next day when Isabel fianally wakes up she finds ruth is missing! She runs to Becky. Becky explains how Madam had sold Ruth. Thats when she saw Madam and starts making her way up to her with great hate. Madam gets very scared and throws a painting at Isabels head. Thats when Becky opens the door telling Isabel to run. She runs with all her might trying to exscape the guards chasing her, but she just wasn’t fast enough. Once they caught her she gets dragged by a horse causing her teeth to fall out, then goes to jury. They find her guilty and brand her with the letter I for Insolence. Every one stares at her, and she feels even more hate torwards Madam. Thats when she relizes she has to exscape, not for her, but her sister.
This picture really reminds me of the book chains. When I look at this picture I see a girl who has no freedom trying to break away from her cage-or in this case chains-looking, dreaming for freedom. Just like the butterfly above her. This reminds me of how Isabel is trying to exscape the world of slaves, and just trying to be free like a white person. Isabel is sent to madams cousins house because she needs another slave to help her around the house since she took a bunch of people into her house to help them out. Her name is Lady. Then one night Ladys house is swallowed by flames. Isabel manged to save one of Ladys paintings but nothing else. They soon found out the reason for the fire was because the loyalists had captured the rebellions. Thats when Isabel starts secretly visiting the prison cell to stay in touch with Curxon. She starts bringing in Scraps for all the prisoners so they won’t starve to death. Once she gets back to Madams house Madam gives her a talk about not talking with the rebellions because apparently its bad for there reputation. Then on Christmas morning every thing changes. The rebellions had a surprise attack on the loyalist and won! Thats when Isabel delivers a note to one of the rebellions and Madam found out. She started to freak and threatened to sell her and her sister, but wait wasn’t Ruth already sold? Madam was really just faking it the whole time! Madam locks Isabel in the potato bin and leaves her there. Isabel feels like shes about to die in the potato bin when she is finally able to break it open. She quickly steels a pass and goes to the jail sell to free Curxon. In her plan Curxon pretends he is dead so Isabel carries him out side “to get rid of him.” Really she just brings him out there so he can escape with her. This book may be over……but there mission has just begun. Song Oh, don’t hang your head It’s gonna end God’s right there Even if it’s hard to see Him I promise you that He still cares When the waves are taking you under Hold on just a little bit longer He knows that this is gonna make you stronger, stronger The pain ain’t gonna last forever And things can only get better Believe me This is gonna make you stronger Gonna make you stronger, stronger, stronger Believe me, this is gonna make you … Try and do the best you can Hold on and let Him hold your hand And go on and fall into the arms of Jesus Oh, lift your head it’s gonna end God’s right there Even when you just can’t feel Him I promise you that He still cares ‘Cause if He started this work in your life He will be faithful to complete it If only you believe it He knows how much it hurts And I’m sure that He’s gonna help you get through this When the waves are taking you under Hold on just a little bit longer He knows that this is gonna make you stronger, stronger The pain ain’t gonna last forever In time it’s gonna get better Believe me This is gonna make you stronger This reminds me of the book Chains because all these bad things are happening to Isabel but she just hangs in there the whole time and always keeps on trying. Like when her sister was sold. She felt really sad and I think she thought about giving up but she knew this would make her stronger so she kept on going. Also in one part of the book she is thinking about how she got the letter I branded on her cheek and remembering how her dad always wore his scars proudly to show her was strong so she was.

The giver

In the book the giver Jonas, his little sister lily, and his mom dad are all sitting at the tablesharing their dreams which they do everyday, though Jonas rarely has dreams, but happened to have one the night before. His dream takes place in the bathing room, where he was with his crush Fiona. He wanted her to take off he her clothes so he could bathe her but she just laughed and said no. When Lily and her dad left, he described this feeling to his mom as a wanting feeling. That’s when she told him that he would have to start taking pills everyday so he wouldn’t keep having these dreams and those feelings. Shortly after this experience he and all the other kids younger than twelve are going to a ceremony to celebrate there new year and age. Every year you get something different. Like when your 9 you get a bike, and when your twelve (which is the age Jonas will soon be) you get assigned a job. Jonas is finally about to get his job assigned at the ceremony…..when they skip him! Soon after they are done reading all the names they finally bring Jonas up for a special announcement. He has been selected as the receiver of memory. Everyone cheers for Jonas for they know how great an honor that job is. Only one person in the whole community is assigned that job and not very often. They say it takes a lot of bravery and courage for that job. Soon Jonas will understand why. The next day at his first training something very odd happens, his trainer talks about all these things he has never heard about like sledding, going downhill, and more. His trainer soon realizes Jonas doesn’t know what those things are. That’s when he gives him the memory of snow. After Jonas finds out he can receive memories he starts receiving ones with different feelings, meanings, and pain. Particularly one day he has a memory about sledding down a hill. Thats when he starts seeing color, and feeling different types of temperatures. One day Jonas is holding Gabe when he accidentally gives him a memory. The next day he doesn’t tell anyone, not even the Giver. After a while when Jonas is soon getting use to new memories, he asks the giver about the old reciever, which is never spoken of. He finds out her name is Rosemary and later in the book he also finds out that Rosemary actually was the givers daughter. He talks about how happy she was until one day she started receiving pain. She asked to be released but when she did her memories were accidentally released into Jonas’s community. Jonas asks to see a video of a release. When he watches the video he finds out that a realeasing is really the communities way off bringing death to the world. Since nobody really has feelings though, they don’t seem to care that they are raking away lives. So one day the giver and Jonas decide to make a plan, Jonas is going to try to escape so his memories will release into and the world will be like it use to be. Then he finds out Gabe is going to be realesed so he brings him with him. In the end they escape to the hill that he had a memory of sledding down in the beginning. Good decision I think a good decision Jonas made was to escape. If he didn’t escape the world would still be missing a lot of things like color, pain, feelings, and even temperatures. Plus, he also saved Gabe’s life and probably many more to come in the future if he hadn’t escaped. I think it would’ve been a very hard decision to make and I am glad he went with his heart and did the right thing. It showed how brave he really was. Another reason why it was good was because everyone else got to discover the memories and saw things they had never seen before like birds. Shark Girl

Shark girl, a take off from soul surfer, begins with a young girl named Jane, going for a swim, when suddenly her life changes. She has gotten attacked by a shark. From the bottom of her hand to the top of her elbow of her right arm has been bitten off! This is a tragedy for Jane since she is known for her artistic talent. In fact, she has won her state artist contests 3 years in a row now. Through out this book Jane is in a state of depression, typically thinking about her artist career. It had been vanished into mid air. If you like girly books you would probably love this book, how ever, I wan not impressed with it at all. My favorite part was when she met this little boy named Justin at a hospital. He is what brings back happiness into her life. I was most impressed with the ending though. That was probably the only good part of this book for me! When I picked this book up, I thought it would actually be about her shark attack, but really it was about the challenges she faced afterwards. My friends described this book t me as amazing, but I give it barely 2 and a half stars! It was also very confusing to read, it was in the form of a poem, and didn't even have quotations when she talks! If I were you, I would not waste my time on this book.
